Please...Don't say Cheese!!!

A trial of a Vegan cheese alternative.

Follow Your Heart brand 'fake' cheese is the only vegan cheese alternative available in the regular grocery stores near me.

Despite it being really, cheating, on my pure eating regimen, I've tried both the cheddar and the mozzarella.

The mozzarella has a slight hint of being flavored tofu, but it's well-flavored tofu, and tastes a lot like the real thing. I haven't properly worked with it in terms of seeing how it 'melts' but imagine it can lead to some pretty good pizza. One block should be enough for a small pie. I certainly hope so anyway, at nearly $5 a package!

The cheddar contains brewer's yeast, which some of us, including myself (Apparently I didn't read the ingredients closely at first pass,) could disagree with. I see all yeasts as leading to itchy crotch fungus via Candida. It does not pass as the real thing, and, to me, tastes rather like soy sauce or soy lecithin. It melts (more seperates,) ok in a frying pan with hot grease. But I'm not crazy about it. Had I tried the cheddar first, I may not have dared to try the delicious mozzarella.

It turns out, this stuff is made by the people who make Vegenaise, which comes highly rated by more-experienced vegans I've talked to. Their website is at www.Imearthkind.com.

Summary: Would recommend this brand. Mozzarella good. Cheddar not so good. Cheese alternative may be better than the real thing, but is still not a pure or 'living' food.
