Ever notice how world events affect email servers? Particularly Yahoo, but I'm sure all free webmail. People in Japan are probably communicating non stop with eachother and other's around the world. Perhaps the rest of us, instead of being selfish and angry, should back off, take a day away from email, and let these people exchange their frantic messages of great importance!!
You may say "NIMBY!" But you can't hide from life forever. Eventually life will reach the United States, and all of the other countries with the illusion of safety, as the veil under which we all live. Consider doing as I suggested if you are having problems with your email, and go and read a book!!!
